After getting the boat off the trailer, I removed the old lights and frayed wiring. In doing so I discovered what may likely be the remains of the original license plate. You can just barely make out a "77" there at the top of the plate, 1977, that is. As you can see it is completely rusted and it had been folded back up under the frame of the trailer. A newer plate had been bolted on over it, hiding it from view until the boat was off.
For reference, I am including a shot of the now empty trailer. Note the nice new tires :-)
